Screening for antibodies against the sheep scab mite (Psoroptes ovis) Pso o 2 antigen in experimentally infested Swifter sheep may fail to identify affected animals

چکیده

Sheep scab, caused by Psoroptes ovis mites, represents a significant threat to sheep health and welfare. Infestations are diagnosed parasite identification in skin scrapings, more recently with commercial ELISA against serum antibodies the Pso o 2 mite allergen. However, little is known about performance of non-UK populations. In this study, six Swifter were experimentally infested P. ovis. Lesion sizes monitored IgG novel Pso-EIP-1 antigens measured ELISA. Although all showed signs infestation, from two animals failed react 2. they did Pso-EIP-1. This indicates that cases scab (Swifter) may remain undetected using ELISA, which have implications for routine screening non- UK breeds.

Antigens of the sheep scab mite Psoroptes ovis.

Sheep scab caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis (Hering) is a highly contagious disease of sheep. As a first step in developing a mite-derived vaccine for controlling the disease, the soluble antigens in mite extracts which induce an immune response in sheep were identified by electrophoretic and immunoblotting techniques. At least 22 proteins were present in P. ovis extracts as revealed by Coomas...

Host preference of the sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis.

Sheep scab mites, Psoroptes ovis, collected from a Merino donor sheep, were used to infest Merino and Dorper sheep, and Angora and Boer goats. Mites were placed on the sheep on 1 or 2 occasions and on 5 occasions on the goats. All the animals were examined at regular intervals for the presence of scab lesions and living mites. Both sheep breeds developed lesions, but those on the Merino sheep w...

Feeding-associated gene expression in sheep scab mites (Psoroptes ovis)

The mite Psoroptes ovis is the causative agent of sheep scab. Although not usually fatal, the disease can spread rapidly and is a serious animal welfare concern. Vaccine development against ectoparasites has primarily focussed on two sources of candidate vaccine antigens - "exposed" antigens that are secreted in saliva during feeding on a host and "concealed" antigens that are usually expressed...

Control of the sheep scab mite Psoroptes ovis in vivo and in vitro using fungal pathogens.

As part of a research programme designed to identify biological agents for the control of sheep scab, the pathogenicity of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae to Psoroptes mites in the presence of sheepskin and wool was examined in the laboratory. No inhibitory effects of skin and wool were observed and high levels of infection were recorded. Subsequently the pathogenicity of formulations of both...

Molecular characterization, expression and localization of a peroxiredoxin from the sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis.

The sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, induces an intensely pruritic exudative dermatitis which is responsible for restlessness, loss of appetite and weight loss. Within the first 24 h of infection, there is a rapid inflammatory influx of eosinophils and apoptosis of the keratinocytes at the site of infection. The former cell type is capable of a sustained respiratory burst, toxic products of whi...
